The future still needs a human babysitter. Every ride in these self-driving marvels comes with a human safety driver, whose job is presumably to look relaxed and confident while being ready to grab the wheel the second the car decides a fire hydrant looks suspiciously like a pedestrian or that a stop sign is merely a suggestion.
Tesla is calling this a "shadow launch," which is a fancy Silicon Valley way of saying "it's not quite ready for prime time, but please look at how clever we are and maybe buy some stock while you're at it." For the lucky few who get to try it, the experience is a glimpse into a world where your taxi driver is a complex neural network with trust issues and an occasional tendency to brake for shadows. It's a world of extra cameras, whirring sensors, and the constant, low-grade tension of wondering if your car is about to have a digital panic attack in the middle of rush hour traffic.
